This week’s show features Gary Taubs, award-winning scientific journalist and author of GOOD CALORIES BAD CALORIES. Taubs asks us to look closely at the fact that the nation’s out-of-control obesity and overweight epidemic closely parallels the introduction of the massive dietary “fat is bad” message we started receiving and believing in more than 30 years ago. Prior to the national push for a reduction in fat intake, the nation’s obesity rate was around 12-14% and the average per person fat intake was around 40%. Now the average person eats only 34% fat, which is a 15% reduction in fat intake and a statistically significant change that could not have happened by random chance. Yet our national obesity rate is now 33% and at least 65% of us are overweight.  Something is very, very wrong. We’re doing what we’re supposed to do, but it isn’t working. Taubs explains how the low-fat experiment failed because it leads us to eat more starches, breads and highly refined carbohydrates, which are the types of foods that are making us fatter than ever. GOOD CALORIES BAD CALORIES chronicles the sloppy and wishful science that led us down the wrong path. This is the most important, comprehensive weight loss book of the new millennium, and Gary Taubs, who refers to himself as a crusading journalist, courageously and intelligently relays the politically incorrect message you won’t hear elsewhere. If you can’t make any weight loss progress even though you’re religious about making low-fat food choices, you need to tune into this show and find out why.
